The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), the national nonprofit association established in 1863 representing 108,000+ veterinarians working in private & corporate practice, government, industry, academia, & uniformed services, is seeking a Senior Manager of Development to join the team of AVMA’s charitable arm – the American Veterinary Medical Foundation (AVMF). 

Established in 1963 & headquartered in Schaumburg, IL, a northwest suburb of Chicago, the AVMF is a thriving Foundation dedicated to increasing charitable resources for the support of the veterinary profession & those that love & care for animals & has strategically positioned itself as a national charitable resource & priority for the support of the veterinary profession, veterinary students, & the care of animals.

This newly created position reports to the AVMF Executive Director & is responsible for managing a portfolio of AVMF donors & soliciting them for major & estate gifts & actively managing prospective major donors for gifts of $25,000 & above. With 2 direct reports, responsibilities include the creative & strategic use of resources to determine the prospective donor’s capacity for giving, building donor interest, sustaining their engagement, & obtaining a gift.  The Senior Manager of Development will attend national veterinary meetings & other prospective donor meetings as needed & will assist the Executive Director with AVMA & AVMF leadership reports designed to communicate fundraising progress & to help identify areas for improvement & growth of the AVMF.  Approximately 50% travel.

To be successful in this role you must be highly collaborative & passionate about AVMF’s mission. Additional qualifications include:
 
  • BS/BA degree.
  • Minimum of five years of related experience in a development role, foundation experience with a national nonprofit association highly preferred.
  • Related experience in higher education/College of Veterinary Medicine a plus.
  • Proven track record of meeting fundraising goals & securing major & estate gifts.
  • Prior supervisory experience a plus.
  • Advanced skills with MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint & fundraising databases.
  • Must be very detail oriented.
  • Excellent oral & written communication skills with strong, collaborative interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work with & effectively communicate with diverse individuals including scientific & non-scientific communities.
  • Must have good project management skills with the ability to track tasks & deadlines for multiple projects.
  • Demonstrated experience working with budgets.
  • High degree of professionalism & code of ethical standards.
  • Must be flexible & open to the culture of organizational change & tackling new opportunities.

A reasonable estimate of the current base pay range for this position is $80,000 - $127,000. Compensation decisions take into account a wide range of factors, including but not limited to relevant experience, skills, certifications, geographic location, business needs, & organizational policies. In addition to those factors, we believe in the importance of pay equity & consider internal equity of our current team members as a part of any final offer.
